Bogor sees heavy congestion as LPG truck blocks highway – Congestion was seen in Bogor city, West Java, on Sunday as police diverted traffic heading to the Puncak resort area amid a 24-hour effort to remove a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) truck that has blocked the Ciawi toll road exit.
Removal efforts have been carried out since Saturday but to no avail. On Sunday afternoon, officers deployed a 100-ton crane to right the body of the Pertamina truck, from which the tank containing the gas became separated during the incident.
"All vehicles heading to Puncak have been diverted to Bogor city due to the blockade at the exit of the Ciawi toll road […] It has led to 1-kilometer congestion in the city," Bogor Police chief AKBP Andi Muhammad Dicky said as quoted by Antara news agency on Sunday.
The incident began on Saturday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. after engine trouble forced the driver of the truck to stop to inspect his vehicle. However, as he alighted, the huge truck moved backward because of a malfunctioning hand brake and then rolled over, blocking the highway.
The removal process has been difficult due to the size and weight of the truck. “The [crane’s] chain was not strong enough and broke. We now have three additional cranes deployed with a total weight of 125 tons,” Andi said.
As the truck was carrying a large amount of combustible LPG, a fire brigade was deployed to anticipate the possibility of a fire. The police advised motorists leaving Bogor for Jakarta to take an alternatives route through Tajur, East Bogor.***
